Dsl Network Problems

Did you know that you could be sharing your internet connection with one if not all of your neighbors?

Yes, if you have a cable or a dsl modem, it is certain you could be sharing your connection with someone in your area. People are able to gain access by tapping into your routers frequency based on an unsecured network on your end.

It's not hard to activate the security, but rather more difficult to enable the security features more effectively. You also can do a search on the Internet based on your home address and see what networks exist around your house. Yours could be one of them. Don't worry, there are several things you can do to secure your wireless connection in your home.

Let's begin to correct your dsl network problems.

1) First, change the default password on your wireless router. All wireless routers come with a default password previously set before purchased. Usually, the same default passwords for every router used for home. It's easy for an outsider or hacker to look up your frequency and take advantage of borrowing your Internet connection.

2) Second, you want to change the default SSID. This default name is most often set to the name of the original wireless router manufacturer. I suggest you change it to something different. Once you have completed this, turn off the SSID broadcast. Your playing with weak security measures and is only meant to keep non technical neighbors from stealing your Internet. It will not prevent hackers from getting what they came for.

3) Switch on the MAC address filtering. In your wireless routers configuration, you want to turn on the MAC filtering and enter the MAC addresses of the wireless cards belonging to your desktop's and notebooks. How does this help? It helps by not allowing other computers that aren't invited to your computer's MAC address list from connecting or communicating with your router.

4) Enable the encryption. It all depends on your wireless devices age and model. Different option appeal for various forms of encryption when securing your wireless hardware. Possibly you have (WEP), (WPA and WPA2). Any of these encryption methods are better than nothing; however WPA2 is the most secure of the three with WEP not being the most secure out of the three. You must make a selection based on the capability of your wireless router to be most secure. Your router may be capable of more than just one type of security method.

Fixing dsl network problems can be extremely frustrating, and will often times take a bit of time. You should keep a log of the things you have tried so you can keep track of what you have done so when you do finally fix it that you know what it was that you did. This is just a time saving tip in case it happens again.
