Wireless Encryption Problems

There is a good chance that if you are having a problem connecting to the internet with your wireless network that the problem is do to your wireless encryption. I know that it sounds scary and you may feel that you are not going to be able to resolve the issue but don't, following along with these tips and you should be able to easily fix it on your own.

It's very important that you resolve your wireless encryption problems, security is everything when it comes to the internet.

You can quickly tell if you are having wireless encryption problems by simply using WEP/WPA, and then checking to see if your computer is even getting an IP address. If you are not getting an IP, then you need to try to manually assign an IP to the device and then check if it connects. Don't get too excited yet if you get connected. There is still a chance that you will still have the same issues with connection stability at some point or another. You should begin updating the firmware on the WNICs as well as your router to see if this will correct the issue.

Tip One: Start with Encryption off There is some complexity with encryption and you will need to reduce the complexity when you first set up your wireless LAN. So see if your client card and Access Point will allow Encryption to be turned off, you will then need to get your networking setup, and then proceed to set up the Encryption. Some equipment requires that you set the Authentication Type, but I will get to this later.

Tip Two: Read the instructions The manufacturer of your hardware may require that you use specific numbers or characters for the Encryption key. So you are going to need to find this information out directly from them, or you may be able to find this in the manual. They may also interpret the characters you input in a specific way.

Check to see if it needs to specify whether your key is an ASCII string (alpha-numeric) or Hexadecimal (Hex).

Tip Three: Watch your Authentication Method 802.11 standard defines two types of Authentication - Open System and Shared Key. There are some products that will allow you to set this mode independently, and without the use of WEP. But most of them will automatically use Open System if WEP is disabled and use Shared Key when WEP is enabled.
